BLVD Gallery proudly presents Atomic Autobody, an exhibition of new works by Seattle based painter Warren Dykeman. The artist returns to the gallery with a new body of work comprised of paintings and drawings that draw upon elements of folk art, handmade sign lettering, digital art, and collage. Utilizing a variety of materials, Warren creates work that contains an intriguing awkwardness which produces a rhythm between contour, color, and mistake. With a nod to the past, Warren embraces the new technology of the digital age combining his experience as a graphic designer to create compositions that use vector style graphics as a jump off for his unique take on primitive folk art styles.
Warren Dykeman grew up in the desert of eastern Washington in Kennewick, just outside of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Having lived under the shadow of America’s atomic ambitions, Warrens work is informed by the Cold War era Americana that surrounded him in those formative years. The show’s title, Atomic Autobody, references these early years when his father worked as an Auto Body Man at a shop with that name. Warren is featured in November on Art Zone In Studio with Nancy Guppy on the Seattle channel. Currently, Warren Dykeman is a graphic designer and lives in the Ballard neighborhood in Seattle, WA.

BLVD is proud to present “Fanatic” a group show that explores the enthusiasm expressed in “Fan” art. The artists participating in this show were given the task of creating art that is in tribute to something that they are truly a fan of. It did not matter whether it was related to entertainment, though much of it is, or cultural pursuits but had to be straight from the heart. BLVD Gallery is fanatic about the vibrant talent here in Seattle so most of the artists involved are from the area and are showing with us for the first time. Intermixed with them are some veteranos like Pars and Ego, as well as a surprise installation from longtime gallery fixtures Zeta Mek.

BLVD Gallery is proud to present “Disconnected” a showing of new works by frequent collaborators Marco Zamora and Derek Albeck. Both of these artists work maintain a dark, somewhat brooding atmosphere that speaks toward the vulnerability of the modern condition..The characters in Marco Zamora’s densely populated street scenes, created with layered ink washes, glide through the frame intent on their destinations without giving the viewer any sense of inclusion. Derek Albecks richly patterned works create a vertiginous feeling of falling and of physical absence that overwhelms ones senses. Both artists have collaborated on major projects with the shoe manufacturer Vans as well as various exhibitions throughout the west coast.
Marco Zamora “For Centuries” 2008
Marco Zamora was born and currently lives and works in Pomona, California. In 2004 he graduated from California Institute of the Arts, with a Bachelor of Fine Art. Using the paintbrush and pen to draw, Marco develops imagery about the urban landscape and the people that inhabit it. Producing a richly complex and experimental image, Marco goes into a neighborhood and shoots a spot, recontectualizing and collaging figures to create each paintings identity. City life, his culture, color/scale experimentation, and the working class have influenced his artwork. Splitting his time between painting and apparel design, Marco’s recent work can be seen in a variety of Van’s ads and collaboration projects as well as galleries up and down the west coast
Derek Albeck “Group Fall” 2008
Derek Albeck was born in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. In 2005 he graduated with honors from California State University Northridge with a Bachelors in Art, focusing on printmaking and painting. Developing complex figurative works using the graphic sensibilities absorbed from his studies in the various forms of printmaking, Derek’s paintings, drawings and serigraphs serve as an intense investigation and critique on the human condition. Derek’s work has been exhibited in galleries along the west coast as well as Canada and the U.K., and was recently included in the Vans Sky Gallery billboard project.

BLVD Gallery proudly presents “Pneumonia, Isolation, and Disorder” a show of new works by Deuce 7. Deuce 7 is a graffiti artist from Minneapolis who is also part of a burgeoning underground subculture of Freight train hoppers. He travels across the country riding the rails, painting his work on trains, in tunnels, squats, and wherever he can do his thing. Deuce 7’s approach to graffiti comes not from a cultural identity like hip hop but from his love of the Railroad and it’s history. He grew up train spotting, living in front of a huge railyard, and after noticing the colorful graffiti on the rail cars he decided that this would be a way for him to contribute to rail culture.
Deuce 7’s work shares the flavor of the “Hobo” Glyphs that rail workers have marked freight cars with for over a century while propelling the look into the 21st century with his studied handstyles and vibrant color schemes. In 2007 Deuce7 made a trip to NYC to do graffiti and experience the Mecca of Street Art. After 2 short weeks he had taken the city by storm and was profiled in the Village Voice with the tagline “Is a guy from Minnesota the new king of New York street art?”, A very impressive achievement for a previously unknown graffiti artist from the midwest in a city renowned for it’s dislike of intruding outsiders.
This will be his first solo show of drawings and paintings on the West Coast.

I know you have been wanting to come check out Foscil during the 6 month residency that they have been holding at BLVD but time just kept on slipping. Well now is the time to do it. Well actually now is the last time that you can come see them do their thing at BLVD. If you don’t know, Foscil is Seattles premiere Nu - Baroque progressive Jazz Hop quartet, Kinda like Tortoise if they were raised on a diet of Wu Tang and Ninja Tune. So please come down to experience one of Seattles best bands.

BLVD Gallery is proud to present the work of Oakland based artist Bigfoot. Bigfoot is a Bay area Graffiti legend and has been a major influence in the skateboard industry for close to a decade. Originally from New Jersey ,young Bigfoot fled to California to be closer to big trees . Disassociated from art school and human society, in 1994 he started writing “Bigfoot” in the streets of San Francisco with relentless fury .Working often with house paint and wooden panels ,his work depicts the conflict between the respect for nature held by the artist’s cast of Bigfoot characters and the destructive agenda of mankind. Despite his reclusive nature, Bigfoot has managed to stay active in society ,designing skateboard graphics and footwear ,showing in galleries in America and Japan,and the release of his vinyl figure with Strangeco in 2004. His eponymous character and his love of heavy metal play a major role in his studio work as well as his highly recognized street art. For May BLVD Gallery presents “Combine, A group show of Cut Paper, Collage, and Assemblage”. The title of this show “Combine” is a reference to Robert Rauschenbergs term for the groundbreaking assemblage work that he made starting in the 1950’s. This work as well as the amazing collages of artists like Romare Bearden, Paul Horiuchi, and a multitude of others have paved the way for the current generation of artists who are utilizing collage and assemblage in their work. Whether through the perspective of design or the traditional art world “Combine” takes a look at a group of artists that have incorporated collage in their work as a way to further explore the boundaries of what they are capable of outside of the tradition artistic media.

Junichi Tsuneoka is an ill freelance artist who was born and raised in Japan. After being a graphic designer for 5 years, Junichi has established a style often recognized as “California Roll Stylie,” the result of both visual and conceptual fusion of Japanese pop culture and U.S. urban culture. He is known for his heavy character work and he founded STUDIO STUBBORN SIDEBURN to broaden his visual communication and to employ his visual language in art, illustration, and design. Junichi’s pieces are very unique, with highly communicative, assertive graphics, and contain clear signs pointing back to his strong design background.
